How anchors are created

Has the system changed how it handles "anchors"??
Recently, we assign a textual name to an anchor, say, "inquiry", but the system assigns it as "#1250806859".

I am not overly bothered by this. Should I be?
But I wonder why this change. Are there technical reasons? Is it somehow better?

Inquiring minds want to know πŸ˜‹

Thanks

Hi @Bruce_McCaughan - that's unusual and seems like an error.

Do you have this anchor repeated? There cannot be two anchors with the same name, so that might be changing the naming by default.

"There cannot be two anchors with the same name"
This makes sense on any given page, but is this limitation site wide?

Meaning, can the anchor "inquiry" exist multiple times if they are on different pages?

    I can confirm that:
    a) it DOES exist on other page(s)
    b) the 2nd one may (or may not) have been created upon duplicating the original page.

Thanks for the reply Scotty. Would be grateful if someone from dev could confirm the follow up question above.
    Cheers,
    Bruce
